<description>Personal power objects are a series of humorous, hypothetical empowerment artifacts, commenting on the ways we choose to empower ourselves though the objects we interact with.

Prayer Transmitter
What connects us to a higher power? Combining the mundane (fold-out colanders imagined as satellite-dishes), the majestically archaic (the heard-but-not-seen magic of radio), and the historic (crowns of religiously-ordained kings), the Prayer Transmitter—a personal church—allows us to re-examine our feeling of power that comes with prayer and our religious objects. Spiritual artifacts range from lucky underwear to rosaries; our strong affiliation with them stems from our belief that they aid in answering our requests, helping us through our daily lives, or strengthening our connectivity to a higher power.
The Prayer Transmitter gives its user physical understanding of the mechanism that propels their hopes/prayers outward or receives their requested guidance. Projecting prayers as if they were radio signals (made user-specific by settings on the helmet that determine want/need, intensity and type) brings light to the fact that our objects of prayer (be they silly or serious) are only as meaningful or powerful as we believe they are.

Tastes of Humility
From suddenly feeling confident (minty-freshness!) to distressed (did I just drink expired milk?!) taste can instantly change our feelings attitudes about a specific situation. While power can mean confidence and influence, it can also mean modesty and respect. Just as one might pop a breath-mint to feel prepared for a romantic encounter, one might eat a ‘humble-mint’ in a moment of disparaging, pretentious behavior to be reminded of their humility. The flavor of the ‘mint’ may become synonymous with self-reflection &#38; modesty, bringing the user back to that mindset each time the taste is experienced.

Privacy Earplugs
Locking a door (to create a blockade) or having tinted windows (to create separation) gives individuals power in their ability retreat and signal their seclusion to other people. Taking inspiration from chronic headphone-wearers in public spaces, the privacy earplugs allow users to define their private spaces while finding dual-uses for the object. When the user chooses to be social, they can be worn around the neck as jewelry. Later, if the user needs to create ‘bubble of solitude’, they can be used as earplugs. This creates a private space both visually (a do-not-disturb cue for onlookers) and audibly (blocked sound for the user).

(I Mean) Business Cards
Establishing authority can be as subtle as the gesture of handing, or being handed a business card. Business cards signal seriousness, prestige &#38; control. In situations when control is lost and needs to be re-gained, or when you wish to announce something confidently, saying what you really want to say can often come off as inappropriate or forward. What then, if what you really wanted to say took on a professional look and feel on business cards? How would the formal gesture of handing someone a business card change the meaning and context of the message? Who then, has the authority?

<description>Impetus is an heirloom iron. Instead of considering ironing a useless task, it can be viewed as a catalyst to special occasions, thus becoming a special-occasion object itself. Combined with solutions to performance problems (leaks, dial placement, storage) and aesthetic improvements, (when was the last time anyone saw a really beautiful iron?) Impetus serves as an emotionally important and elegantly functional object.

		<guid isPermaLink="false">1361352</guid>

<description>For a 300-level Human-Centered Design course, we were assigned the ‘Enhancements for Mundane Objects’ project. I was asked to explore the potential for enhancing the user relationship between the user and common objects that are to an extent invisible but necessary. In this project I was asked to observe and identify a common object and improve upon its interface with its users by finding a relationship between the object and context that compliment each other equally.
For the assignment, I focused on pillows. The notion of “sharing a bed” with someone (something) is highly personal and important, so why do we neglect our pillows? I set out to design a pillow that you needed to interact with, almost as though you were sharing your bed with another person.
The Loop is a large circular tube pillow (18’ around, 20” circumference). While testing, people interacted with the pillow’s many affordances (many of which hadn’t been thought of during the design process). Users were able to interact with a familiar object they had ignored, but had now found new uses and appreciations for.

<description>What’s Past is Prologue is a fluid, interactive time capsule, a testament to the permanence and impermanence of everything. As a static fixture in a changing world, it contains individuals’ personal mementos; these physical artifacts reflect our fleeting selves, creating a narrative and meaning unique to whoever chooses to pursue the interaction.

Exhibited at booth B-52 at Salone Satellite 2011 in Milan, Italy, April 12-17

<description>Assigned for a 200-level Human-Centered Design course, the Object of Desire project required the creation of a hybrid desk object, a dual-functioned tool for organization, excitement, and emotional attachment. Poke is a combination speaker and pushpin set. Because our desk objects are changing and our music is becoming increasingly mobile, Poke aims to make music both static and changeable. Connecting to ever-changing notes and photos on a bulletin board or wall, the user determines where —and how long —their speakers will be in a specific location, also determining the amount of time their personal mementos will be tacked up and visible. The charger serves as a home for these pushpin-speakers, and also as an additional speaker.

		<description>My nonna’s (grandmother’s) past is remarkable.

As a young woman she was living in Italy during the Second World War. She and my grandfather experienced and witnessed (and were a part of) some incredibly strange and stressful events. It needed to be chronicled— it was the perfect complexity to be sorted out by info-graphics (an assignment for a 400-level graphic design course.)
I first transcribed my grandmother’s verbal account and wrote a condensed version, noting the characters and their individual journeys. I researched the locations and distances between locations in the narrative, and investigated the sizes and general shapes of the cities mentioned. Combining these elements together, I constructed
a large infographic map of locations and characters depicting interaction and the progression of the story. Also produced was a book of family photos with information on who each individual was to act as a guide for the large infographic map. I selected a specific part of the narrative to animate, highlighting an integral part of the story. To accompany the printed materials, I segmented the original recording of the story onto iPod tracks allowing the viewer to hear the story in its detailed entirety.

<description>In the spring of 2010 I was approached by the NMU Foundation (a department of Northern Michigan University responsible for alumni relations, fund-raising and investments) to design a campaign to promote faculty, current student, and recent alumni philanthropy. After a conducting a discussion/focus group with current students, hearing their views, and researching/being presented the financial workings of alumni donations, I aimed to provide students with the same information I had been privilege to—where was our money going, and how was it being used.
Acting as art director for this project, I supervised 18 individual photo-shoots (photos by Jordan Buzzy and Patrick O’Gara) to specifically highlight how students’ NMU experiences were made possible by alumni donations, and how they too could help someone experience Northern Michigan University as alumni by donating to their specific programs. This made the knowledge full-circle, allowing students to understand how funds of former students were used, and how their donations could be used in the future.

Winner of a 2011 CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education) Bronze 'Circle of Excellence' Award for Fundraising Programs.

<description>In late spring of 2010, myself and a few of my favorite co-workers (Seth Hill-Kennedy, Keith Voorheis &#38; Victoria Leonhardt) sat down and wrote a grant proposing a program and venue for student organizations and entrepreneurs to fundraise and start small businesses. We called it the Wildcat Market. (We were awarded the grant: the event ran for the 2010-2011 academic year.)
